Tax Information

How does TIAA-CREF report distributions? Federal law requires TIAA-CREF to report information about distributions from retirement plans, mutual funds, brokerage accounts and 529 plans to the IRS and to you on the applicable Form 1099. If you had a distribution or reportable event, you will receive a copy of the related Form 1099 that details your transaction(s). TIAA-CREF may also be required to report this information to your state of permanent residence. back to top When will Form 1099-R be mailed? For all distributions and rollover transactions, TIAA-CREF will mail Form 1099-R by January 31. back to top Can I view my tax form online? Yes. You can log into your account to view your tax forms. In order to view, click Log In and then select electronic delivery of your tax reporting form under My Profile. Then go to the Manage My Portfolio tab and click Statements & Records to see your tax reporting form. Tax forms become available by January 31. Even if you selected electronic delivery of your tax reporting form, you will continue to get a copy by mail. back to top What if I do not have a user ID and password? You can create a user ID and password by clicking the Sign up for access link on the homepage. back to top What if I did not request email delivery of my tax forms? To view your tax forms, log in to your account and:
  • Click the My Profile tab
  • Click E-Delivery Preferences
  • Check the box next to Tax Reporting Forms
  • Type your email address at the bottom of the page
  • Click Submit
Note: To view or print your tax forms, click the Manage My Portfolio tab and then click Statements & Records. Tax forms that are sent electronically are also mailed. back to top When will Form 1042-S be mailed? TIAA-CREF will mail Form 1042-S by March 15. These forms report payments made to foreign citizens residing in a foreign country (NRAs) or foreign citizens residing in the U.S. who have not certified their U.S. residency. back to top When will Form NR-4 be mailed? TIAA-CREF will mail Form NR-4 by March 31. These forms report distributions paid to participants who converted Canadian currency contracts to U.S. currency contracts. back to top When will Form 480.6A be mailed? TIAA-CREF will mail Form 480.6A by February 28. These forms report distributions paid to residents of Puerto Rico that are not subject to mandatory Puerto Rico withholding. back to top When will Form 5498 be mailed? TIAA-CREF will mail Form 5498 by January 31. This form reports contributions, rollovers, recharacterizations and conversions made to Traditional, Roth or SEP IRAs as of December 31. The form also reports the Fair Market Value (FMV) as of December 31. TIAA-CREF will mail a second form 5498 by May 31, 2008, to report a contribution being made to a Traditional or Roth IRA between January 1 and April 17 but designated as a 2007 contribution. back to top How do I change my federal and/or state income tax withholding election?
